Levoit air purifier filters should be changed every 6 months as a minimum and 12 months as a maximum. How often you change your Levoit air filter depends on the model, the air pollution level, and how often and at what speed you use your purifier.
All Levoit air purifiers have three levels of filtration that remove air contaminants and purify the air in your home. The pre-filter, True HEPA filter and the high efficiency activated carbon filter work together to remove over 99% of contaminants and odors from the air and will need changing depending on the model of Levoit air purifier you are using.
In this guide, we breakdown how often you need to change the filter on each model. But we’ve also included some of the factors that make you have to change your filters sooner than this. More importantly, we explain HOW to replace your Levoit air filter.
When to change the filter on your Levoit air purifier
Almost all of the Levoit air purifiers need a filter change every 6 – 8 months, but three models, including the PlasmaPro 400S, and VeSync Core 400S and 600S, run effectively for 12 months, while the Core mini runs for 4-6 months before needing a new filter.
Changing your air filter at the recommended time is necessary to guarantee your purifier is actually removing contaminants from the air.
Here’s a helpful summary of the most popular Levoit series, and you can find ALL of the models in the table below.
Note: Levoit pre-filters should be cleaned at 2 – 4 weeks intervals regardless of when they should be replaced. However, the Levoit True HEPA and high efficiency activated carbon filters should not be cleaned – they can only be replaced.
The table below summarizes how often to change your Levoit air filter and how to monitor the filter life.

Factors that affect how often you change your filter
Despite Levoit’s recommendations for filter replacement, there are three main factors that can cause earlier replacements:
- The level of pollution in your home and specifically where the purifier is set-up (e.g. lounge vs bedroom)
- The rate at which you use your purifier, and
- The settings on which you run your purifier. Is it always running at maximum speed for 24 hours?
The longer you use your purifier in a highly polluted area and at maximum fan speed, the more often you would need to replace the filter.
How to monitor your Levoit filter performance
There are two main ways to monitor the filter performance of your Levoit air purifier.
- You can use the “check-filter” indicator on the LED display.
- Or if your system is compatible with the VeSync software, you can get updates directly from there after connecting the system to the application.
The VeSync app is a smart feature of the Levoit air purifier that monitors filter life in percentage.
You can set up the app by downloading it from the play store, creating an account and following the prompts to link your purifier.
When the app shows 5% or less as the filter life, that means it’s time for a replacement.
Other features from the VeSync app include real-time updates on air quality, air quality history for previous weeks, and changing of the purifier settings in terms of fan speed and time intervals.
How to know when you need to change the filter
With the Levoit air purifier, you get a subtle notification from the “check-filter” indicator. This doesn’t always mean you should change the filter but it’s a reliable reminder to confirm that your filter is in good shape, and also an opportunity to clean out dust or other particles from the pre-filter.
Ideally, the “check-filter” indicator comes on every six months. But if you notice any of these problems then it means your Levoit air filter needs a replacement.
- The purifier is louder than usual
- The airflow is not as strong as it used to be
- You checked the filter and noticed lint, dirt or even hair clogging it
- The room with the purifier smells bad.
How long a Levoit air purifier will last
The efficiency of the Levoit air purifier depends on the life of the filters. For your Levoit air purifier to last a long time and function efficiently, you must change the filters as often as it’s recommended. As long as your filters are working well, the purifier will get rid of unpleasant odors, allergens, particles and other contaminants and there is less chance of purifier unit itself becoming damaged.
There are two common signs that your Levoit air purifier is malfunctioning and may need a replacement or repair.
One, an unusual noise when the fan is on, and two, refusal to respond to button controls. In these cases, reach out to Levoit customer support either through mail or a phone call.
How to change a Levoit filter
Follow these instructions to change your Levoit air filter:
- Turn off the Levoit air purifier unit and unplug it from the light source.
- Remove the old filters and dispose them
- Clean out any dust inside the purifier using a vacuum hose.
- Unwrap the new filters properly and place them into the purifier housing. Install the activated carbon filter first, then the True HEPA filter and lastly, the pre-filter.
- Replace the back cover
- Plug in the purifier
- Reset the Levoit air purifier
Always remember to reset your purifier after changing the filter. Otherwise the filter light indicator will not turn off.

Are Levoit filters washable?
Do not use water or any liquid to clean Levoit air filters or the purifier itself. Also, do not use abrasive or chemical cleaning agents on the body of the purifier and the filters.
For the pre-filter, use a brush or a vacuum hose to clean at regular intervals and to prevent dust build-up. If you must clean the outside of the purifier, use a soft, dry cloth to wipe. You can also use a damp cloth in case of stubborn stains provided you immediately wipe the purifier with a dry one.
So while the pre-filters can be cleaned, they shouldn’t be washed.
