The Best Air Purifiers For Large Rooms

If your bedroom, office or living space is on the larger side, regular air purifiers won’t be enough to improve its air quality. Thankfully, most air purifier companies also have bigger, more powerful options that are specifically designed for larger spaces.

These purifiers often offer the best technical features but usually have an equally large price tag.

In this guide, we talk about the best air purifiers for large rooms in terms of their technical capacities, coverage area, versatility, ease of use, durability, customer reviews, and the value for money.

What to look for when buying a large room air purifier

Before we move on to the list of best air purifiers for your large room, it’s helpful to know why some purifiers are suitable for large rooms while others are not. For this particular list, we have considered the following features:

CADR Rating

CADR stands for Clean Air Delivery Rate. It simply shows how much air the purifier can clean in one minute. The larger the CADR value, the faster your purifier can work, and the better suited it is to purify air from larger spaces.

Most standard purifiers offer a CADR of about 200 cfm (cubic feet of air moved per minute). For a large room, you should be looking for purifiers that go beyond this rate.

ACH and Coverage Area

ACH stands for Air Changes per Hour. Along with the CADR rating, this shows how many times the purifier can clean the air in your room every hour.

As you can guess, every purifier is going to have different ACH values for different sized rooms. For example, the Medify MA 112 can clean all the air in a standard room of 1000 sq. ft. five times every hour, and so its ACH value for 1000 sq. ft. is 5. But if the room is 2500 sq. ft, it can only do it twice every hour, meaning its ACH for that room will be 2.

To get good results, we recommend that you look for an air purifier that offers at least 2 ACH for the room of your size. If you have allergies or asthma, however, you should be looking for purifiers offering up to 5 ACH.

Noise Levels

For bigger rooms, your purifier is going to be equipped with a bigger fan, so you’re likely to notice more noise as well. While some are particularly noisy, you should be fine as long as the noise levels are below 50 decibels.

Design

Air purifiers for large rooms are almost always large in size as well. Your device is going to stick out like a sore thumb if its aesthetics don’t match with your room or office space. We recommend looking at the size and the design options well before making your purchase.

Filter Type

Most air purifiers include a true HEPA filter, which is fantastic for removing most particles that are larger than 0.3 microns in diameter.

In the large air purifier category, however, you’re likely to come across the term H13 filters frequently. These filters are even stronger in the sense that they can filter out particles down to 0.1 micron in diameter, making them better equipped for certain pollutants, like smoke.

Depending on the level of protection you need, you should be looking for H13 filters, although true HEPA filters can work perfectly if your room don’t experience heavy pollution or you don’t suffer from allergies

With the basics now covered, we look into the best air purifiers designed to suit larger spaces, feel free to click on the images or links for more information on Amazon about each air purifier.

1. Blueair classic 605

Blueair has established itself in the world of air purifiers as the go-to brand with amazing performance, and especially the Blueair Classic 605 designed for larger rooms.

This purifier comes equipped with a super powerful fan capable of delivering a massive CADR of 500 cfm (cubic feet of air moved per minute) for dust, 500 cfm for smoke and 600 cfm for pollen, all while maintaining an incredible ACH value of 5 changes per hour for large rooms up to 775 sq ft.

The filter uses Blueair’s ‘HEPAsilent’ technology that includes an electrostatic barrier as well as the usual pre-filter, activated carbon filter and HEPA filter. This makes the device capable of removing up to 99.97% particles of 0.1 microns diameter, which includes most dust, smoke, pollen, mold, and pet dander.

To make the user experience easier, Blueair goes one step ahead and provides an app that enables you to change the settings remotely while also allowing you to link the device with Alexa. However, the wifi control is limited to fan speed and the intensity of the LED light.

Pros:

  • Very powerful fan with high CADR rating
  • Sturdy steel construction
  • User friendly operation
  • Built-in wifi app and Alexa connectivity

Cons:

  • No air quality sensor
  • Large device body
  • Bugs reported in the app

2. Coway Airmega 400s

The Coway Airmega 400s is a powerful air purifier capable of working in rooms as large as 1560 sq. ft. with 2 ACH and 624 sq. ft. with 5 ACH, meaning it can easily clean air from most large spaces at dazzling speeds.

It can achieve this fantastic performance owing to its fan that can generate a CADR of 350, combined with its 3 stage filter unit that includes a pre-filter and a ‘MAX2’ filter unit, which essentially includes the typical true HEPA filter with an activated carbon filter.

This device also offers the real time air quality monitor missing in the Blueair 605, along with five fan modes, relatively quiet functioning at 42 decibels, timer settings, an energy star rating, and compatibility with Alexa.

Pros:

  • Suited for large rooms up to 1560 sq. ft
  • Lightweight
  • Quiet
  • Real time air quality monitor and an auto mode
  • Relatively inexpensive

Cons:

  • Still uses the true HEPA filter in its ‘Max-2’ unit

3. IQAir GC Multigas

Few purifiers can match the incredible performance and quality offered by the IQAir GC Multigas, which claims to be the number 1 medical grade purifier for dust, smoke and odors.

This filter can clean air from rooms up to 1125 sq ft in size at an incredible rate of 5 ACH with a massive new-edition 300 cfm fan.

The real standout in this device, however, is the actual filter unit. The ‘HyperHEPA’ technology it uses can filter up to 95% particles less than 0.003 microns in size, which is 10 times smaller than a normal virus.

Translated, this purifier is the best choice for you if you have health concerns and require a filter to reliably provide protection from airborne pollutants.

The only major downside is the high cost. It does come with a 10 year warranty, however, so you might want to keep that under consideration before deciding to rule it out for cost reasons alone.

Pros:

  • Incredibly powerful filter unit
  • Large room coverage of 1125 sq. ft
  • New-edition fan
  • 10 year warranty
  • Easy controls
  • Quiet performance (35-70 decibels)
  • 10 year warranty

Cons:

  • Expensive (compared to others on our list)

4. HoneyWell HPA 300 Air Purifier

Not all rooms are going to be 1000 square feet or more, and therefore not all purifiers designed for ‘large rooms’ may be suitable for you. If your room is less than 500 sq ft, then the HoneyWell HPA 300 Air Purifier offers the perfect balance between coverage area, cost and performance.

This sleek, modern device can clean air from a room of up to 465 sq. ft. with 4.8 air changes per hour at an incredible CADR value of 320 cfm.

The air is filtered through a true HEPA filter and a pre-filter capable of removing 99.7% airborne particles of up to 0.3 microns in size. While this filtering unit may not seem particularly unique on paper, it is very effective even in the lowest fan speeds, making it especially suited to fit larger bedrooms.

It also offers an auto off timer function, filter check/reset lights, 4 cleaning levels and a light dimmer, giving you an easy but effective range of control over your device.

Pros:

  • Suited for larger bedrooms
  • Easy operability with multiple features
  • Energy Star rating

Cons:

  • Expensive filter replacements
  • Relatively loud even at lower fan speeds

5. Alen 75i air purifier

Very few companies have the confidence to offer a lifetime warranty the way Alen does with its 75i purifier, which is a testament to the quality and the craftsmanship that goes into designing these devices.

The 27 pound purifier features a flat, rectangular design that enables it to fit into most spaces without any issue, and the variety of finishes it offers means that the purifier can seamlessly fit the aesthetics of any room, be it modern or rustic.

It can clean air from rooms up to 1300 square feet every thirty minutes with CADR of 347 cfm. Despite these incredible specifications, the device is remarkably quiet with just 49 decibels of noise produced even in the highest noise settings.

The filtering unit itself consists of a H13 true HEPA filter, which can filter out 99.99% particles up to 0.1 micrometers in diameter. More importantly, these can last 3-5 months longer than regular HEPA filters, which ultimately translates to savings from less frequent filter replacements.

On the downside, the purifier does not come with a remote or wifi connectivity, and users have also complained that the ‘auto’ function is not always effective.

Pros:

  • A lifetime warranty
  • Unique design with multiple finishes
  • Very low noise
  • H13 true filter included

Cons:

  • No remote or wifi connectivity
  • Inefficient Auto mode

6. Medify MA-112 Air Purifier

Most purifiers designed for large rooms focus on the 1000-1500 sq. ft range. If your room is larger than that, then very few devices compare to the Medify MA-112 air purifier

The 33 pound device can clean air from rooms of up to 2500 sq. ft. at 2 ACH, and 3700 sq. ft at 1 ACH with a massive CADR rating of 500 cfm. Combined with its dual H13 filters, the MA-112 can remove 99.99% particles up to 0.1 microns in size, including most viruses, bacteria, mold, dust, smoke and even odors.

The purifier offers four fan speeds with reasonably low noise level of 70 decibels even in the highest setting. While this may seem high compared to other filters, one must also keep in mind that the device is meant to be used in much larger spaces where the noise might be nullified.

Pros:

  • Very large coverage area
  • Relatively quiet functioning
  • Child lock
  • Energy star certification

Cons:

  • Expensive

7. Austin Air Healthmate Air Purifier

The iconic American brand Austin Air has collated some of its very best features in the Austin Air Healthmate Air Purifier, which stands out in our list due to its focus on simple, effective functioning.

The device features a powerful fan with three speed settings, the highest of which generates 400 cfm of CADR with 2 ACH for a room up to 1500 sq. ft. in size. Austin Air is also the only company using 60 sq. ft. of true HEPA filter, 780 cubic inches of activated carbon, and an astounding 5 year filter life. This essentially means you can trust this device the way the American Red Cross and even the US government have done in the past.

The only major downside is the purifier’s heavy cost.

Pros:

  • Certified performance trusted by reputed organizations like the Red Cross
  • High CADR
  • 5 year filter life
  • Wheel based design

Cons

  • Expensive
  • No remote or wifi connectivity

8. Blueair Blue Pure 211+

The Blue Pure 211+ is another great entry from Blueair, equipped with a powerful filter that covers an area of 540 sq. ft. at 5 ACH while maintaining a CADR of 350 cfm.

Like most Blueair purifiers, the device offers a single-knob based easy control, multiple color options, a compact and lightweight design, an energy star rating and an electrostatic filter with the typical mechanical filter arrangement, making it a great choice for those who prefer a simple, hassle-free device for their rooms.

With its price being relatively cheap, you do have to trade off on certain functions like the real time air quality monitor and an auto mode, but the durability and consistent quality more than make up for it.

Compared to the Blue Pure 121, this model offers lesser coverage at a lower CFM, but is still a fantastic choice compared to many other purifiers on the market.

Pros:

  • Easy operation
  • Great for rooms ~500 sq. ft
  • Consistent high quality performance
  • Multiple color options

Cons:

  • No smart features
  • Less coverage compared to Blue Pure 121 despite similar prices

The Shark HE601 has earned a spot in our line-up today owing to its great coverage area and several useful features.

The device has six high-speed microfans that cover an area of 1200 sq. ft., capturing 99.98% particles up to 0.1 microns in size via its HEPA multifilter.

Many users have also commended its real time air quality display capable of showing the PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations of your room air.

You also get a remote control option with the device, but there is no wifi connectivity or any ‘smart’ feature as such, which is a definite downside considering the high price.

Pros:

  • Sleek, modern design
  • Advanced real time monitor
  • Remote control

Cons:

  • CADR ratings aren’t exclusively mentioned
  • No smart features
  • Expensive

10. Hathaspace Dual Filtration Air Purifier

The first thing you’ll notice about the Hathaspace Dual Smart Air Purifier is how bulky the device looks. At 29 pounds of weight and more than 2 feet of height, the cuboidal device is simply huge.

With a coverage area of 2800 sq. ft. at 1 ACH and 1400 sq. ft. at 2 ACH, however, the performance matches its size.

The filter assembly consists of a 3-stage H13 HEPA filter for controlling almost all air pollutants you can think of. You also get a smart air quality sensor, an ‘auto’ mode, a remote control, a 5 year warranty and customer support available 7 days a week.

With great power, however, comes a great price, which is the biggest downside to this purifier.

Pros:

  • Large area coverage
  • H13 HEPA filter
  • Multiple useful features
  • Wheels for portability
  • Child-lock feature

Cons:

  • Bulky
  • Expensive

Helpful tips

Is a bigger air purifier better?

A bigger air purifier is definitely better for a larger room. For smaller rooms, having a bigger purifier doesn’t hurt but it can lead to greater maintenance costs, higher power consumption, and as you might expect, larger electricity bills.

Is it better to have one large air purifier or multiple small ones?

For a large continuous space, having a bigger air purifier is not necessarily better than having many small ones, but it can definitely be easier.

If the combined coverage area of your small air purifiers is equal to the area of your large room, then they can certainly clean your room just as well as a larger, more expensive air purifier might.

However, having many small purifiers means having to stay updated on multiple devices, their filter replacement times, and sometimes even having to install multiple apps to operate all of them, which can be rather cumbersome.

The exception to this is if you are looking for an air purifier that can remove a specific contaminant, such as mycotoxins. Plentiful Air has a complete guide to air purifiers that can remove this nasty contaminant available here.
