Pure Enrichment (PureZone) Air Purifiers – Cleaning And Maintenance

PureZone is a trusted brand for air purifiers. To make sure your purifier works properly it needs regular cleaning and filter replacements.

To clean a PureZone air purifier, turn it off and disconnect its power supply. Use a damp cloth to wipe the exterior. Detach the inlet grill and clean it using a vacuum or soft brush. Rinse the pre-filter and use a vacuum brush to clean the HEPA, carbon and anti-bacterial filters. The UV bulb doesn’t need cleaning.

This guide takes you through how to clean each PureZone air purifier model, how to change the filters and reset them afterwards.

PureZone air purifiers clean our homes by removing contaminants from the air. There are three main steps in all PureZone air purifiers:

  • An electric fan rotates to draw polluted air from the room into the unit. The fan speed is selected when setting the machine up, and determines the rate of air purification. For example, on the highest setting, the fan draws air in at the maximum speed, and results in a significant change in air quality in 30-45 minutes.
  • The air is then passed through a set of filters, each of which removes a different kind of pollutant.
  • Clean air is then sent out of the purifier into the room

After turning on, the PureZone air purifier starts working immediately and usually takes 30 minutes to an hour to clean the air. How long it takes to clean the air depends on your room size and level of pollution. This guide explains how to clean and care for all Pure Enrichment Air Purifiers, including the:

  • PureZone Smart Turbo Air Purifier
  • PureZone 3-in-1 True HEPA Air Purifier
  • PureZone HALO True HEPA Air Purifier
  • PureZone Kids Bear Air Purifier
  • PureZone Elite 4 in 1 True HEPA Air Purifier
  • PureZone Breeze Tabletop Air Purifier
  • PureZone Mini Portable Air Purifier

The following steps explain how to quickly and safely clean a PureZone air purifier. Any instructions that apply only to a specific model (or set of models) is highlighted in each step:

Unplug The Air Purifier

Before cleaning your air purifier, it’s important to turn it off and disconnect it from the power source. This might seem like an obvious step, but you’d be surprised how many people forget to do it.

Almost all models are turned off by pressing the power button on the control panel once. If your model operates on a battery, like the Mini Portable Air Purifier, make sure that it’s not charging. This safety measure protects your purifier from accidental short circuits or other electrical problems.

Cleaning The Outside

Dust builds up on the outside of an air purifiers as the fan draws the air in from the rooms. This dust can enter the purifier when the outside isn’t cleaned regularly. To clean the outside, simply wipe over the entire unit with a dry, soft cotton cloth.

If there are any hard spots or stains, you can use a damp cloth, but make sure that no water enters the purifier (especially by the vent). It’s best to also wipe it dry immediately after using a damp cloth.

Clean The Air Intake Grill

The next step is to clean the air intake grill. First, detach the inlet from the air purifier by unlocking the latch, and then clean the dust off it using a vacuum or a soft brush. You can also use a slightly wet cloth if necessary.

A build up of dust in the grille stops the airflow, which can lead to overheating and even damage the system. To prevent this problem, clean the grill properly once a month. You may need to do it more if your air is particularly polluted (e.g., during wildfires).

Clean The Filters

The next and most important step in maintaining PureZone air purifiers is cleaning the filters. Remember to wear gloves and a face mask before taking your purifier apart to reach the filters, as the dust, mold spores and other nasty pollutants trapped in the filters can be released. The last thing you want is to breathe them in.

Some models, like the Smart Turbo have combination filters, while others like the PureZone 3-in-1 has what appears to be an all on one filter, but each filter (the pre-filter, activated carbon and HEPA filters) can be separated and cleaned individually.

Pre-Filter

The pre-filter is found attached to the front surface of the activated carbon filter. It traps dust, debris, and other large-sized contaminants. This reduces the amount pollutants that reach the carbon and HEPA filters, which improves their lifespan and their ability to remove smaller contaminants.

To clean the pre-filter, separate it from the carbon filter and use the vacuum brush to remove dust and lint. If you notice any hardened debris, wash the pre-filter with warm water and clean with a mild detergent, and rinse it off.

Activated Carbon Filter

The activated carbon filter is found in all PureZone air purifiers. You can use a standard vacuum brush to clean the activated carbon filter.

However, do not use water, detergent, or any volatile cleaning agent (alcohol, benzene, etc.) on the filter as it will damage it. Rinsing the carbon filter is ineffective as water cannot break the loose bond between carbon and the contaminants it has trapped.

True HEPA Filter

The primary filtration of PureZone air purifiers is based on the True HEPA filter. Never use any water or detergents to clean this filter. Water, soap, and other cleaning agents destroy the filter media, and should not be used.

Only use a vacuum brush or dry cloth to clean the lint and dust off the HEPA filter.

4-In-1 Filter

Some models, like the PureZone Smart Turbo Air Purifier come with a 4-in-1 filter, that combines a pre-filter, activated carbon, antibacterial and HEPA filter all in one. These filters should be cleaned once a month by vacumming them with the brush attachment. Never wash a 4-in-1 filter.

UV Light

The UV light emits short wave ultraviolet light rays and is guaranteed 12 months of operation. It doesn’t need cleaning, only replacing after 12 months. When you do replace the bulb remember not to touch the glass part as the natural oil from our fingertips can stop it from working properly.

Ionizer

The ionizer, a part of the 4-in-1 Elite PureZone air purifier is the last step in filtration. The dust that collects on the ionizer pins can be removed using a clean, dry cloth. Do not use water or any detergent. Simply wipe the pins clean.

How To Change a PureZone Air Filter

Pure Enrichment air purifiers have different kinds of filters. The pre-filter needs a replacement every month. The carbon and HEPA filters require a change every six months or sooner (depending on the pollution). In comparison, the UV light bulb should be replaced every 12 months. Combination filters, like the 4-in-1 should be changed every 6 months.

However, depending on the polluted your air is you may need to change the filters more often. Have a look at the pre-filter when cleaning and change it if the filter material is swollen or caked with dirt.

As for the carbon filter and the HEPA filter, the reset light turns on when it’s time to be replaced. Except in the Elite PureZone in which the PRE and HEPA lights respectively light up whenever replacement is needed.

To change a Pure Enrichment Air Purifier filter detach the front cover and locate the filter strip. Pull the strap to remove the filters (and unscrew the UV lamp). For all PureZone air purifiers insert the new HEPA filter in the slots, and then place the carbon and pre-filter using the strips, or for combination filters, simply slide the new filter in place. Reset the filter light indicator.

For the PureZone™ 3-In-1, 4-in-1 and Smart Turbo Air Purifiers replace the UV lamp.

UV Lamp

Before changing the lamp, check that it’s turned off and ideally wear gloves and eye protection.

To change the UV light:

  • Switch the air purifier off
  • Unlock the latch and remove the inlet grill
  • Remove the HEPA filter
  • Depending on your model detach the metal lamp cover by loosening the screws (e.g., Elite 4-in-1) with a screwdriver or by removing the connector (PureZone 3-in-1).
  • Pull the bulb out by first opening the foam safeguards from the right side, and then rotating the bulb 180 degrees counterclockwise.
  • Place a new bulb, turning it clockwise and reassemble the unit following the same steps in reverse.

Remember to never look at the light.

How To Reset a Pure Enrichment Air Purifier

The reset light illuminates (w.g., PureZone Halo) or flashes (e.g., 3-in-1 Air Purifier) whenever a filter needs replacing. After changing the filter, reset the light by pressing the power button for 5 seconds (most models). To reset the Elite PureZone air purifier, press and hold the timer and UV buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds. For the Smart Turbo, press and hold the filter reset button for 3 seconds.

PureZone air purifiers have reset lights that tell us whenever a filter needs changing. The Elite 4-in-1 PureZone Air Purifier levels up a notch with two different kinds of lights for the carbon filter and True HEPA filter:

  • The HEPA indicator light turns red when the HEPA filter needs to be changed
  • For carbon filter replacement, the PRE indicator light illuminates red

Once you’ve changed the filters, you need to reset the filter light. Although many units don’t have an exclusive filter reset button, you can reset it using other controls.

Here’s how to reset a PureZone air purifier:

  • After replacing the filters, turn the unit on.
  • Press the power button down and release after 5 seconds.
  • The light will turn off/stop flickering, indicating that the air purifier has been reset.
  • For the 4-in-1 Elite PureZone Air Purifier, press the timer and UV light button together for 3 seconds. The indicator lights will blink for 3 seconds before turning off, signaling a reset.

Once you have reset the unit, the settings will need to be reselected:

  • Press the power button and turn the air purifier on
  • Press the timer button and select a time interval you want to turn the unit off.
  • If you want to turn the ionizer on (in the Elite PureZone), press the ION button.
  • Press the UV button to turn the UV lights on
  • Select a fan speed (low, medium, or high) using the SPEED button
  • To switch to the auto mode, press the SPEED button until the air monitoring system is activated
